Previous reports were overviews of a limited number of images. Now, at the conclusion of MRO’s Primary Science Phase, we have completed an analysis of all images on and near the Tharsis Montes and integrated other data and saltation theory into the analysis. We propose that the bedforms are dust aggregates. These may eventually lithify into abradable yardangs and indurated surfaces, a “duststone” that appears to be a common Martian rock with no known terrestrial analog.

HiRISE images of yardangs and sinuous ridges in the lower member of the Medusae Fossae Formation, Mars
HiRISE images of the lower member of the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) were used to identify characteristics of two specific landforms that are well expressed in this particular geologic unit; yardangs and sinuous ridges. Yardangs are wind-eroded ridges that are usually confined to arid environments where the bedrock materials can be easily eroded by windblown sand. Yardangs are common in the ...
متن کاملTransverse Aeolian Ridges on Mars: Distribution, Orientations, and Ages
Introduction: Mars is host to a wide range of aeolian forms such as dunes, ripples, dust devils, dust storms, yardangs, and ventifacts. Large dune fields characterized by low albedos and large duneform sizes have been observed and occur mainly around the north polar cap and in the southern mid-latitudes. However, another morphologically and dimensionally distinct population of aeolian bedforms ...
متن کاملMorphometric characteristics of Yardangs in the Lut Desert, Iran
Yardangs are one of the most amazing geomorphic features of Lut desert, Iran developed in alluvial deposits of Pleistocene. They appear as the streamlined hills that are separated by U-shaped troughs with a flat-topped. The study of yardang’s morphometric parameters is important to define their morphological indices. In This study, we describe the morphology of yardangs in the Lut playa, analyz...

متن کاملMRO’s HiRISE COVERAGE OF FLUVIAL LANDFORMS ON MARS DURING ITS PRIMARY
Introduction: The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment completed its primary science phase (lasting one Mars year) in November 2008. By the end of the primary science phase, the HiRISE camera completed 9549 observations for a total of approximately 8 Terabytes of data. These observations cover an area close to 938,000 km 2 or approximately 0.6% of the surface...
